Mission:
The Genomics Centre at Kano Independent Research Centre Trust (KIRCT) is committed to advancing the field of genomics in Nigeria, with a focus on improving public health and reducing the burden of diseases in the country. Our mission is to apply cutting-edge genomics technologies and expertise to address the pressing health challenges facing Nigeria, particularly in the areas of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Objectives:
1. To establish a world-class genomics facility in Nigeria, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and expertise.
2. To conduct research in genomics, focusing on preeclampsia, diabetes and hypertension prevalent in Nigeria.
3. To develop and implement genomic-based diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of diseases.
4. To train and mentor local researchers, clinicians, and students in genomics research and its applications.
5. To collaborate with national and international organizations to advance genomics research and translation in Nigeria.
GENIE II Instrument
At the heart of our innovative genomic diagnostic lab, the GENIE II Instrument combines portability with precision, leveraging Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) technology to detect infectious diseases rapidly and reliably. Its user-friendly design and real-time data capabilities make it indispensable for field studies and laboratory diagnostics alike.
HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)
The HPLC system is a benchmark for chemical and biological analysis precision. It is capable of isolating, identifying, and quantifying complex compounds. It serves as a critical tool for drug development, environmental analysis, and biomarker discovery.
LCMSD (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry Detector)
As a powerhouse for molecular profiling, the LCMSD system is used to explore intricate molecular interactions. It offers unparalleled accuracy and in-depth analysis, from drug metabolism studies to metabolomics.
NanoDrop Oneᶜ UV-Vis Spectrophotometer
The NanoDrop Oneᶜ is a microvolume marvel, quantifying nucleic acids and proteins with unparalleled precision using as little as 1-2 µL of sample. It maximizes data accuracy while minimizing sample waste.
Qubit™ Flex Fluorometer
The Qubit™ Flex Fluorometer offers highly accurate, sensitive quantification of nucleic acids, proteins, and other biomolecules. Complementing the nanodrop spectrophotometer. With the ability to process up to 8 samples simultaneously, it enhances high-throughput efficiency, making it ideal for genomic and proteomic research.
KingFisher Flex Automated Extraction System
High-throughput and highly efficient, the KingFisher Flex automates DNA and RNA purification processes for up to 96 samples per run. It ensures uniformity and reproducibility, saving precious time for researchers.

Illumina MiSeq & NextSeq 2000 Sequencing Systems

GridION ONT (Oxford Nanopore Technologies)
For long-read sequencing, the GridION ONT offers a revolutionary solution for high-quality, real-time DNA sequencing. Its ability to read long stretches of DNA without the need for amplification enables structural variant detection, epigenetic analysis, and the sequencing of entire genomes with unprecedented resolution. This long-read capability complements our short-read systems and expands the scope of our research to include complex genomic regions that are typically difficult to sequence with traditional methods.
